Virtu Financial Interview Guide

Virtu Financial is a global market maker hiring 2027 summer interns in the US, Dublin, London and Singapore. Its trading, research and engineering internships start with a resume screen, then a HackerRank programming test sent by email.

Updated November 2026. The London VES Technical and Client Support internships close on 15 November 2026. The 2027 quant trading internships start on 7 June in the US and Singapore and on 21 June in Dublin.

What we know

  • Virtu is hiring 2027 quant trading interns in Austin, Chicago, New York, Dublin and Singapore, and quant research interns in New York, Dublin and Singapore.
  • On the US and Dublin postings you apply to one internship only. The US form lets you tick other tracks you want to be considered for, and in Dublin you are evaluated for every internship during screening.
  • The quant trading internships require some programming. Virtu's full-time trader postings say no finance background is necessary.
  1. 1. Application

On the US and Dublin postings, apply to one internship. The form asks about your grades, your graduation year and any outstanding offers or deadlines.

  2. 2. Resume screen

Virtu screens your resume first. For certain roles an automated tool scores it against the job's criteria.

  3. 3. HackerRank test

On the trading, research and engineering internships, pass the screen and Virtu emails you a HackerRank programming test.

  4. 4. Next steps

The Dublin quant trading posting says Virtu reviews your test and then reaches out to arrange next steps.

Overview

Virtu is a financial technology firm with proprietary trading and client-facing businesses, and it has been in business since 2008.

Market making is the core. Virtu quotes bids and offers in over 25,000 securities, on over 235 venues in 37 countries. For clients it also has execution, liquidity sourcing, analytics and workflow technology products.

Virtu is headquartered in New York, and its EU headquarters is in Dublin. It also has offices in Austin, Boston, Chicago, Palm Beach, Short Hills, Westchester, Toronto, London, Paris, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney and Shanghai.

Virtu's quant traders learn market structure in depth, monitor risk and work with quants and developers on the strategies. Its quant researchers are statistics experts with advanced STEM degrees.

Programmes

Virtu's careers page describes a 10-week internship that covers every part of the business. You get a company-curated global training week, real-world trading problems to solve and social events with the team.

Quantitative Trading Intern, Austin, Chicago and New York

It runs 7 June to 13 August 2027, with some flexibility, for rising juniors or students ready to work full time between December 2027 and June 2028.

You work alongside senior traders on projects that introduce you to market making. Most of your time goes on trading problems as they come up in the markets and on a list of team projects, with several senior mentors through the summer.

Projects come from desks such as FX, fixed income, options, ETFs and energy. Training runs all summer, with a training week in New York or Austin.

Hard sciences are preferred: physics, chemistry, engineering, maths or statistics. You need some programming, and Python, SQL, Java or C++ are a plus.

Quantitative Trading Intern, Dublin

It runs 21 June to 27 August 2027 for students graduating in 2028, and all subjects are welcome. Interns use quantitative analysis and research to find patterns that could improve Virtu's trading algorithms.

Quantitative Trading Intern, Singapore

The dates match the US: 7 June to 13 August 2027, with some flexibility. All majors are welcome, and it is for rising juniors or students ready to work full time between December 2027 and June 2028.

Quantitative Researcher internships

  • New York (PhD): you complete one or two projects, which can come from different mentors and groups. It asks for strong C/C++ and Python with Pandas.
  • Dublin (Master's or PhD): 21 June to 27 August 2027, for an advanced degree in computer science, data science, maths, statistics, engineering, physics or another quantitative field. Projects can span quant research, algorithm development, machine learning and deep learning.
  • Singapore (PhD): 7 June to 13 August 2027, for a PhD in science, maths, engineering or another quantitative field.

Engineering internships

  • Software Engineer interns in Austin and New York need strong Python plus Java or C++.
  • Software Engineer and FPGA Engineer interns in Dublin, 21 June to 27 August 2027, for students graduating in 2028.
  • Frontend Engineer (UI) in New York and Hardware Engineer (FPGA) in Austin, both 7 June to 13 August 2027. The Austin FPGA role is for Master's students in electrical engineering or a related field.

VES internships, London

Virtu Execution Services (VES) has a Technical internship and a Client Support internship in London for summer 2027. Each closes on 15 November 2026. The Technical internship covers algo development, technology support and analytics. The Client Support internship covers sales, trading, electronic coverage and workflow technology.

The Technical internship runs 21 June to 27 August 2027, based in London for openings in London and Dublin. It is for students entering their final year or ready to work full time between December 2027 and June 2028.

Full-time roles

Full-time Quantitative Trader roles are posted in Chicago, Dublin and Singapore, and Quantitative Researcher (PhD) roles in Austin and New York. The trader postings say no finance background is necessary, and the researcher role needs no prior quant finance or asset-class experience.

The Chicago trader posting says new quant traders go through an intensive period of mentorship and trade-floor training, then move into deploying and running strategies.

Application

The form asks for your university, your GPA (your overall grade in Dublin), your graduation year and whether you will be ready for full-time work in 2028. It also asks about outstanding offers or deadlines, so say if one is close.

Because an automated tool may score your resume against the job's criteria, put the skills the posting lists where they are easy to find.

Virtu wants traders with exceptional academics and strong programming. Put your coding projects near the top of your resume.

Online assessment

Virtu's 2027 trading, research and engineering internship postings say the HackerRank test comes by email after you pass the resume screen. On the London Client Support internship, only selected applicants get one.

The Singapore full-time trader posting says the test is there to gauge your coding ability, so practise coding problems in the language you write fastest before you open the link. On the Dublin and Singapore full-time trader roles, it is the first step after the application screen.

Interviews

On the Chicago full-time trader posting, passing the online test gets you a phone screen.

As of November 2026, Virtu does not publish the HackerRank test's length or topics, how many interview rounds follow it, or what they cover.

What Virtu looks for

Virtu's quant trading postings ask for a "physicalizer": someone who spots issues and builds fixes without rigid direction or fanfare. Have a story ready where you did that.

Women's Winternships

Virtu runs one-week Women's Winternships in Dublin and Singapore for women in their second or third year, graduating in 2028 or 2029. After the resume screen you may get a programming test, then interviews.

Dublin, 4 to 8 January 2027

Each day mixes lectures, trading games and programming challenges, and the week ends with a final group contest.

Singapore, 4 to 8 January 2027

Applications closed on Friday 30 October 2026. The week has training on market-making fundamentals with exercises on the tools Virtu's traders use, and daily team trading puzzles that build to a capstone project at the end.

New York

As of August 2026, Virtu advertised a New York Women's Winternship from 11 to 15 January for second-year undergraduates graduating in 2029, with an early chance to be evaluated for the 2028 summer internship. The listing was removed on 21 October 2026.

Trading competitions

Virtu sponsored the 2024 Rotman x Trinity SMF trading competition in Dublin.

As of 2026, Traders at Berkeley lists Virtu among the firms recruiting on site at the Berkeley Trading Competition, held each spring, where participants meet the firms' traders, researchers and engineers between rounds.

How to prepare

  • If you play poker or strategy games, put it on your resume and be ready to talk through the odds. Virtu's Chicago full-time trader posting says that experience helps, though it is not required.
  • If you get a Winternship place, warm up on probability before 4 January. Both weeks have trading puzzles or games every day.
  • Practise making two-sided markets and managing the position each fill leaves you with.
