Overview

Squarepoint is a global investment manager. It builds a diversified portfolio of systematic and quantitative strategies across many asset classes, trading frequencies and markets, and most of its investments are based on backtests of historical market data.

Systematic work is the main focus, and the discretionary trading group is growing. Squarepoint added discretionary and fundamental strategies in equity, volatility, commodities, macro and credit in 2020. In 2026 it launched a late-stage growth equity fund in July and a CLO platform in August.

The business dates back to 2000. It ran inside Lehman Brothers and then Barclays before going independent in December 2014. It is privately held and led by its four founding partners, and headcount passed 2,000 in June 2025.

As of September 2026 it is headquartered in New York and London. The about page says seventeen cities, and the locations page lists 18: Bangalore, Boston, Chicago, Dubai, Geneva, Hong Kong, Houston, Jersey, London, Santa Monica, Madrid, Milan, Montreal, New York, Paris, Singapore, Warsaw and Zug.

As of September 2026, STG (Squarepoint Trading Group), the proprietary trading group Squarepoint set up in 2022, shares much of Squarepoint's infrastructure but has its own investment staff.

Programmes

Investment internships

Investment internships lead towards a career as a Quant Researcher or Trader. They usually go to penultimate-year students on a Bachelor, Master or PhD in maths, physics, statistics, machine learning, mathematical finance, engineering or similar.

Squarepoint's FAQ widens that to penultimate or final year, and says Investment and Tech roles mainly look for STEM degrees. A finance background helps but is not required for every role.

The summer internship usually runs May to August, and Squarepoint also runs Fall and Winter internships. The stated length varies: the early-careers page says 2 to 6 months, its FAQ says 3 to 6, and the Intern Quant Researcher form sets a 3-month minimum. Plan on at least three months.

Intern Quant Researcher

As of October 2026 the posting covers London, Paris, New York, Singapore and Hong Kong. Interns research and implement strategies within the firm's automated trading framework.

It asks for a quantitative degree, at least one major programming language such as C++, Java or Python, strong communication and the ability to work under pressure.

Software developer internships (2027)

The 2027 postings are in London, Montreal, Singapore and Warsaw, and all of them require you to be in the penultimate year of study. Each lasts at least 12 weeks. London and Warsaw run throughout the year and ask for a preferred start month. Montreal and Singapore run in any season and ask for a preferred season.

Technology interns typically study computer science, computer engineering or similar. The London posting calls the internship a fast-paced training programme in software development for algorithmic trading. You work with mentors on a project with visible business impact, in teams such as Data Engineering, Risk, Market Data, Quant Development and Frontend.

The London form has you pick up to 2 tracks from C++, Python, Quantitative Development and Front-End Development.

Graduate roles

Squarepoint hires recent graduates and people with a few years of experience into full-time entry-level roles in its Investment and Technology teams. As of October 2026 the postings include:

  • Junior Quant Researcher, in London, New York, Singapore, Boston, Paris, Zug, Geneva, Hong Kong and Bangalore. The ML Alpha Research version asks for a master's or higher in computer science, ML or NLP, statistics, signal processing, optimisation, maths or a related STEM subject.
  • Junior Discretionary Trader, in London, Houston, New York and Singapore. You train on the desk with senior discretionary traders, and you need a quantitative or related bachelor's degree and programming, ideally Python.
  • Desk Quant Analyst, supporting research, trading and production. Analysts can progress into Quantitative Research or Quantitative Development.
  • Graduate Quant Developer, in London, Montreal and Singapore. It asks for Python, C++ or KDB+/q and demonstrable experience using AI tools in development, data analysis or research.
  • Graduate Software Developer, in London, Montreal, Singapore and Warsaw, where you can state a preference for the Python, C++ or Front-End track.
  • Trading Infrastructure Specialist, an 18-month rotation programme in the Trading Infrastructure Support team.

Application

Squarepoint hires opportunistically, so apply when you feel ready and can interview within the next few weeks.

Send one application, for the job that best fits your skills. If Recruiting thinks another role suits you better, they will contact you about it. You should hear back within 1 to 2 weeks.

Education requirements vary by role. A strong academic record or relevant work experience improves your chance of an interview.

What the quant research intern form asks

  • Your GPA and the scale it is on.
  • A course transcript, which is optional but highly encouraged.
  • A tentative start date, and when you could start a permanent full-time role.
  • Any expected or pending offers, with their deadlines.
  • Whether your university requires the internship, and whether your last internship led to a return offer.

If you hold another offer or an exploding deadline, still apply and tell Recruiting. They will try to speed up your interviews.

Online assessment

The online assessment is a HackerRank test. You have up to 7 days from receiving it to complete it. If exams or another deadline clash, email your recruitment contact for an extension straight away.

Squarepoint does not publish what the test covers.

Interviews

Early-careers hiring runs one centralised interview process for all teams. Interviews are usually a video call or face to face onsite, and the invitation email tells you which.

There is more than one round, and Squarepoint does not publish what its quant or trading rounds cover. Its FAQ suggests asking your recruitment contact what each round focuses on.

Coding interviews

Put your strongest coding language on your CV, and Squarepoint assigns an interviewer who fits it. If you know several, tell Recruiting your preference before the interview. On the 2027 software developer internship forms you choose C++, Python or KDB+/q as your interview language.

What they look for

Squarepoint wants people who are driven, thorough and not afraid to make mistakes. It values curiosity and entrepreneurship, and looks for people who aim to grow with the firm for the long term.

Its page for experienced hires says interviews look at technical skill and individual ambition, and that it hires only when the two line up. Have a clear answer on why Squarepoint: the London software developer form asks for one in writing.

Squarepoint encourages you to note down questions and ask them during the interview. Its philosophy page describes a flat structure with informal huddles and access to leadership, often at founder level.

Interviews may be recorded on audio or video. The application forms say so up front.

After the offer

Graduate hires are allocated to a team after they secure a role and before they start. Allocation depends on your background, your interview feedback and business needs, and you can tell your recruitment contact which team you prefer.

Interns get dedicated support from their manager, present on their projects, sit in on senior management knowledge shares and go to a summer intern event.

How to prepare

  • Each time you are invited to a round, ask your recruitment contact what it focuses on, as Squarepoint suggests. If a quant research round turns out to be maths or statistics, warm up with timed probability sets the day before.
