Overview
Citadel is an alternative investment manager that manages capital for private, public and nonprofit institutions. As of 2026 it runs funds in equities, commodities, fixed income, quantitative strategies and credit.
As of 2026, Citadel, founded by Griffin in 1990, has its headquarters in Miami, Florida, and offices across North America, Asia and Europe.
In 2026 the joint Citadel and Citadel Securities intern class covered quantitative research, investment and trading, and engineering. About 90% of those interns came from technical subjects such as maths, physics and computer science, and the rest studied finance or economics.
Programmes
Quant research internships
The Quantitative Research Analyst Intern role in Europe is for bachelor's and master's students in maths, statistics, physics, computer science or another highly quantitative field. It runs 11 weeks, June to August, and you work with senior team members. Citadel can occasionally be flexible on timing.
PhD students apply to separate postings. The Quantitative Researcher PhD Intern role in Asia runs the same 11-week, June to August programme in Singapore and Hong Kong. In the US, the Quantitative Research Engineer PhD internship runs 11 weeks. Citadel's Quantitative Research Engineers work with quant researchers to build software for automated trading systems. The US Machine Learning Researcher PhD Intern posting asks for hands-on Python or C++.
Investment & Trading Intern
The European internship is a structured trading programme where you work with senior team members. It takes bachelor's, master's and PhD students in applied maths, engineering, statistical modelling, calculus, computer science, physics or a related subject.
The US version ran in Greenwich, New York and Miami. Its posting came down on 3 March 2026.
Citadel Associate Program (CAP)
CAP is an equities programme. The summer internship is in New York, and interns learn long/short equities investing through classroom instruction, direct mentorship and rotations on investment teams.
The 2028 summer internship is taking applications from undergraduates graduating between December 2028 and May 2029.
The summer 2027 posting, for 2028 graduates, came down on 4 February 2026. It added a team-based stock pitch to the classroom training and rotations, and said successful interns get a full-time offer into CAP. The 2028 posting mentions neither.
The CAP Full-Time Program 2027 is for undergraduates graduating between December 2026 and July 2027. You need no prior finance experience. Training pairs hands-on teaching with live work on Citadel's research process and its data, technology and risk systems.
Data and engineering internships
The Sector Data Analyst Intern role in Europe asks for Python, SQL and Excel. Launch, an 11-week US engineering internship for sophomores in computer science, computer engineering or another STEM subject, had its posting removed on 9 March 2026.
Graduate roles
Quantitative Research Analyst university graduate roles are open in New York, Miami and Greenwich, and in Europe. The European posting asks for a bachelor's or master's in a quantitative field, and PhD graduates there apply to the Quantitative Researcher PhD Graduate role.
Equity Quantitative Research (EQR) hires graduates as Quantitative Traders in New York. Your core job is to optimise trading strategies for profit. Citadel wants a quantitative degree from a top university, and says strong candidates often bring graduate research or competition experience. Put competition results and any graduate research near the top of your resume.
Software Engineer university graduate roles are in New York, Miami, Greenwich and Houston.
Application and selection
Iris Wang, Citadel's campus recruiting lead, said in June 2026 that many of the strongest applicants knew how to use AI tools well, including for coding, and the best stood out for judgment and adaptability. Have an example ready of using AI tools in your own work, with a time you checked or changed what they produced.
As of August 2024, Ken Griffin's line on hiring was that Citadel hires people who are winners in life, and that being a winner in finance is often not enough. Have a story ready about a goal you set early and reached.
In April 2024 Matt Mitro, then head of campus recruiting, said 20 to 30 interns in a typical year have competed in one or more Olympiads. He said an Olympiad tells Citadel you like maths, computing or physics, enjoy working in teams and like to compete, though it is never the only reason to hire someone.
Collaboration is a trait Citadel looks for, Mitro said in June 2025. He also said interns are taught to be commercial: to understand how their work applies in markets and whether an idea can be put to use in time. When you describe a project, say how it would be used in markets.

Interviews
In February 2024, a Citadel equity quant researcher who interned in summer 2023 said his interview questions were like small research projects and the interviews felt like a discussion. Talk through your reasoning as you go.
The postings name the skills each role wants. Prepare these for yours:
- Quant research: probability and statistics, including machine learning, time-series analysis, pattern recognition and NLP, plus turning models into Python, R or C++.
- Investment & Trading: thinking about the world systematically and quantitatively, and handling uncertainty with a rigorous statistical approach.
- EQR Quantitative Trader: a strong interest in game theory, decision theory and strategy games, and the instinct to apply them to markets.
- Software engineering: exceptional programming, with C++ and Python preferred, and familiarity with probability and statistics.
- CAP: reasoned conclusions from incomplete or imperfect information, and a demonstrated interest in public markets, investing, business analysis or fundamental research.
In the 2026 HFAC x Citadel stock pitch competition, every sophomore (Class of 2029) finalist gets a first-round CAP interview.
The internship
In 2025 the internship's first week included training.
As of June 2026, you work closely with a full-time team, get paired with a mentor and have a one-to-one with your manager every week.
Discover, Datathon and competitions
Discover and the Women's Datathon
Both are listed as Citadel or Citadel Securities student programmes, with a page on each firm's site. The 2026/27 terms list Discover as NYC, Spring 2026 and the Women's Datathon as Miami, Winter 2026, with two nights in a hotel. Check current dates on the programme page.
They are for first- and second-year undergraduates graduating between December 2028 and June 2030 at a university in the US, a US territory, DC or Canada.
You send a resume and representative work experience, and you may have to interview. Citadel picks on academic performance, qualifications and a demonstrated interest in trading or investing.
Write the application yourself. The terms ban content from generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, though a basic grammar check is allowed. Citadel aims to contact the applicants it selects about two weeks after the deadline.
Pitch competitions
In the Fall 2026 Pitch Competition, teams of two to four undergraduates pitched a long or short on one of eight US-listed stocks. Entrants had to study in the US, DC, a US territory or Canada and graduate between December 2026 and May 2029.
The first-round entry was a memo of no more than two pages, appendix included, plus an Excel valuation model. Up to eight finalist teams presented in person at Citadel's New York office on 23 October 2026. Before you apply to CAP, write a pitch in that memo and model format for practice.
As of 2026, finalists in the HFAC x Citadel stock pitch competition, run with CAP, had to deliver a full 10-minute presentation deck.
Central Bank Challenge
Citadel ran its Fixed Income & Macro Central Bank Challenge in London on 23 to 24 April 2026. It was a two-day economic challenge for university students in four-person teams, with an introduction to Citadel Fixed Income & Macro.
The 2026 challenge was open to undergraduates at European universities studying maths, economics, statistics, physics, computer science or another quantitative field, graduating between December 2027 and June 2029. Applications ran from 26 January to 6 March 2026, and the hiring committee picked up to ten teams on academic performance, qualifications and a demonstrated interest in investing.
How to prepare
- Drill probability and statistics questions and say your reasoning out loud as you go. The US quant research graduate posting asks for strong knowledge of both.
- Mix brainteasers in with your probability and statistics practice. In February 2024 a Citadel equity quant researcher said he drilled all three to stay sharp.
- The EQR Quantitative Trader posting asks for a strong interest in game theory, decision theory and strategy games, and the instinct to apply them to markets. Dice Market Making trains that instinct: you price a set of dice and decide whether to buy, sell or pass at the quoted price.
