Overview

BlackEdge Capital is a proprietary trading firm, founded in 2009, that specialises in options market making: it provides liquidity by always being willing to buy and sell. Its office is in Chicago's Fulton Market neighbourhood.

The site says BlackEdge has become a major player in several US markets over the last decade. It calls itself a small, growing firm whose success rests on close work between trading and technology.

As of 5 Nov 2026 it is also hiring experienced engineers for an early-stage, high-frequency trading effort driven by machine learning that works at the nanosecond level. They own performance-critical C++ and design the hot path with BlackEdge's FPGA hardware engineers.

Programmes

Trading and Technology internship

Both tracks spend the first half learning option pricing theory, market-making dynamics and how the trading system runs. In the second half, trading interns deliver a project that uses BlackEdge's internal data and tools to help a trading team with its daily work, and software engineer interns write production code that adds new functionality to the trading system.

The trading internship asks for students graduating in 2028 with at least a bachelor's degree in a STEM field. The software engineer internship asks for a 2028 graduation and a degree in computer science, computer engineering or a related field.

BlackEdge does not name the summer, but a 2028 graduation points to the summer 2027 class.

Graduate roles in trading and technology

BlackEdge says it is always looking for recent graduates who want to start their careers in Trading or Technology. It takes backgrounds in computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, economics or another quantitative subject.

Graduate Quantitative Researcher 2027

This Chicago role works on options pricing, risk management or market dynamics, often on problems that run for weeks or months. You turn traders' high-level needs into research questions, then present what you find to the trading and technology teams.

You build data-driven models that balance theory with practical use, and they must be implementable within BlackEdge's low-latency trading systems. The posting sets the role against the fast, short-cycle puzzles its quantitative traders solve: research problems here are ambiguous and need deep mathematical intuition, independent research and creative model building.

Application

As of 5 Nov 2026 the board lists three postings. Besides the Graduate Quantitative Researcher 2027, they are the experienced-level Trading Strategy Software Engineer and General Interest - Experienced Hires.

The graduate researcher form

  • Required: your highest degree completed or in progress (bachelor's, master's or PhD), your graduation date and your high school graduation year.
  • The graduation date list runs from 2026 May/June to 2028 May/June, with Earlier and Later at either end.
  • Optional: a GRE score, and whether you have any pending deadlines BlackEdge should know about.

Online assessment

No official online assessment is documented.

Our pick is timed mental maths and logic drills, since BlackEdge asks trading interns for strong quantitative skills and logical reasoning.

Interviews

BlackEdge's site lists what it looks for in each group:

  • Trading interns: strong quantitative skills and logical reasoning, excellent spoken and written communication, and composure under pressure.
  • Software engineer interns: exceptional problem solving, exposure to design and architectural patterns, and growing knowledge of a low-level area such as networking, operating systems, compilers or computer graphics.
  • Graduates: strong analytical skills, intellectual curiosity and a passion for solving complex problems.

The site says BlackEdge values relentless incremental improvement and extreme ownership, and the researcher posting says the buck stops with you. Have an example ready of something you improved step by step and owned yourself.

How to prepare

  • Practise timed mental arithmetic and say each step out loud. BlackEdge asks trading interns for clear spoken communication and composure under pressure.
  • Learn how options are priced, and read up on Treasury options, where the researcher posting calls BlackEdge an industry leader. The site says its traders draw on options theory training as well as their quantitative education.
  • Practise quoting a two-sided price and managing the inventory each fill leaves you with.
  • The researcher posting describes ambiguous problems in options pricing, risk management or market dynamics, often running for weeks or months. They need deep mathematical intuition, so build it on probability problems. Have one long project ready to explain, from the vague question to the model.
  • BlackEdge asks software engineer interns for exceptional problem solving. Work timed logic puzzles and explain each step as you go.
